Original Kettle Premium 22 from Weber

The Weber Original Kettle Premium 22 provides direct heat, indirect heat, smoke, and enough cooking area without becoming an outdoor kitchen. Its black enameled bowl and domed lid remain recognizable because the form manages airflow exceptionally well. It is inexpensive, widely supported, and capable of cooking everything from quick burgers to a slow pork shoulder.

Porcelain enamel protects the steel bowl and lid, while adjustable vents below and above regulate oxygen and exhaust. A hinged cooking grate allows charcoal to be added without removing food. The 22-inch diameter creates two useful zones, and the deep lid accommodates larger cuts. The Premium model adds a high-capacity ash catcher, eliminating much of the mess associated with basic charcoal grills.

Charcoal requires lighting time, weather awareness, and learning to control vents rather than turning a knob. The grill is not insulated like a ceramic cooker, and its light body should be secured in severe wind. Empty ash only when cold, keep the vents clear, and cover the enamel between uses. Replacement grates, wheels, handles, and dampers are readily available.

More expensive grills hold temperature longer or offer greater convenience, but Weber’s kettle teaches the essential relationship among fuel, air, distance, and time. It can sear, roast, and smoke with very little mechanism to fail. Buy a chimney starter and an instant-read thermometer rather than a cabinet of branded accessories. The grill’s limits make a better cook, and its simplicity keeps the focus on food.
